The Formula, Explained Simply

To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply the Celsius value by 9/5 (or 1.8), then add 32:

°F = (°C × 9/5) + 32

The extra 32 exists because the two scales don't start at the same zero point — 0°C (freezing) lines up with 32°F, not 0°F. The 9/5 factor accounts for the fact that Fahrenheit divides the same temperature range into more, smaller degrees.

A Worked Example

Say you want to convert a summer day of 28°C to Fahrenheit:

  • 28 × 9/5 = 50.4
  • 50.4 + 32 = 82.4°F

And for a common recipe temperature of 200°C:

  • 200 × 9/5 = 360
  • 360 + 32 = 392°F

Note that US recipe conversion charts often round oven temperatures to the nearest common setting (e.g., listing 200°C as "400°F"), so if a recipe's numbers look slightly off from an exact conversion, that's usually why — check your recipe source's convention if precision matters.

The Freezing and Boiling Points

In the Celsius system, water freezes at 0° and boils at 100°. This makes logical sense. In the Fahrenheit system, water freezes at 32° and boils at 212°.
