The Math Behind the Multiplier

Baking pans are calculated by area (or volume). A 9-inch round pan has an area of roughly 63.5 square inches, while an 8-inch round pan has an area of just 50 square inches. Even though it's only a 1-inch difference in diameter, the 9-inch pan holds over 25% more batter!

How to Use Your Multiplier

Once the calculator gives you a multiplier (for example, 1.25x), you simply multiply every single ingredient in your recipe by 1.25.

  • 1 cup of flour becomes 1.25 cups (1 1/4 cups).
  • 2 eggs becomes 2.5 eggs (whisk 3 eggs in a bowl and pour in half).
  • 1 tsp of baking soda becomes 1.25 tsp.
