Why IVF Due Dates are More Accurate Than Natural Pregnancy Dates

Congratulations! Your embryo transfer was successful, and you have finally graduated from your fertility clinic. But as you transition to a standard OB-GYN, you might run into a frustrating administrative issue: your new doctor wants to change your due date based on your Last Menstrual Period (LMP).

If you conceived via In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), using a standard pregnancy calculator is a huge mistake. Here is why.

The Problem with LMP in IVF

Standard pregnancy math starts the 40-week clock on the first day of your last period. This assumes that you ovulated exactly 14 days later, and conceived on that day.

If you had a Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET), your natural cycle was entirely suppressed by estrogen and progesterone. You likely didn't have a natural period for weeks or even months prior to your transfer. Your uterine lining was built artificially, and the embryo was implanted on a very specific, medically chosen day.

Using the date of your last "bleed" (which may have been induced by birth control) will result in a due date that is wildly inaccurate, sometimes off by weeks.

The Exact Math of Embryo Transfers

In a natural pregnancy, we have to guess when the egg met the sperm. In IVF, the embryologist watched it happen in a petri dish. We know the exact age of the embryo down to the hour.

Human gestation lasts exactly 266 days from the moment of conception (fertilization).

To calculate your due date, we simply subtract the number of days the embryo grew in the lab:

• For a 3-Day Transfer (Cleavage stage): Transfer Date + 266 days - 3 days = Transfer Date + 263 days.
• For a 5-Day Transfer (Blastocyst): Transfer Date + 266 days - 5 days = Transfer Date + 261 days.
