How to Convert Your Annual Salary to an Hourly Wage

When considering a new job offer, you might find yourself comparing an annual salary to an hourly rate. How do you know which one actually pays more?

To make an accurate comparison, you need to break down your annual salary into a standard hourly wage.

The Standard Formula

If you work a traditional full-time job (40 hours per week, 52 weeks a year), you work exactly 2,080 hours per year.

To find your hourly wage, simply divide your annual salary by 2,080.

  • A $50,000 salary ÷ 2,080 = $24.04 / hr
  • A $75,000 salary ÷ 2,080 = $36.06 / hr
  • A $100,000 salary ÷ 2,080 = $48.08 / hr

What About Unpaid Time Off?

The 2,080-hour formula assumes you are paid for 52 weeks a year (including paid vacation and paid holidays). However, if your job doesn't offer paid time off, and you plan to take 2 weeks of unpaid vacation, you are only working 50 weeks.

In that case, your total hours are 2,000 (50 weeks × 40 hours). A $50,000 salary divided by 2,000 hours actually equals $25.00 / hr.
