How to Calculate the Number of Working Days in a Month
If you are a project manager trying to schedule a software sprint, or an HR professional trying to calculate a prorated salary for a new hire, looking at a standard wall calendar isn't enough.
A month has 30 or 31 days, but you only have a fraction of those days available to actually get work done.
If you don't accurately calculate the true number of Working Days in a month, your project will miss its deadline before it even starts.
The Standard Working Day Calculation
In the corporate world, a working day (or business day) is defined as Monday through Friday.
Because the calendar shifts every year, the number of working days in a specific month is never static. For example, October 2024 had 23 working days, but October 2025 will only have 22.
The baseline mathematical average across the entire year is roughly 21 working days per month.
The Impact of Federal Holidays
While subtracting the weekends gets you close, you must also factor in public holidays where the office is legally closed.
This is where the math gets tricky. If a federal holiday (like the 4th of July) falls on a Saturday, many companies will observe the holiday on the preceding Friday, meaning you lose a working day. If it falls on a Sunday, they observe it on the following Monday.
The month of November is notoriously the hardest month to schedule projects around, as it contains both Veterans Day and Thanksgiving (which often wipes out Thursday and Friday), frequently dropping the total working days down to just 18 or 19.
Why Working Days Matter for Payroll
If an employee's annual salary is $60,000, you don't just divide that by 12 to find their daily rate. You must divide it by the total working days in the year (typically 260).
- $60,000 ÷ 260 = $230.76 per working day.
If a new employee starts halfway through November (which has 19 working days), and they only work 10 of those days, their first prorated paycheck should be for exactly $2,307.60.
