Whether you are buying a new home, investing in rural land, or planning a commercial development, understanding property size is crucial. However, real estate listings often mix and match units of measurement—some list the lot size in square feet, while others use acres.

If you aren't familiar with these conversions, it can be difficult to visualize exactly how much land you are getting for your money. Here is a simple guide to calculating area and converting between square feet and acres.

What is an Acre?

An acre is a unit of land area used in the imperial and US customary systems. Historically, it was defined as the amount of land a yoke of oxen could plow in one day.

Today, the standard measurement is strictly defined: 1 Acre = 43,560 square feet.

To put that into perspective, an acre is roughly the size of a standard American football field (excluding the end zones), or about 16 tennis courts.

The Simple Conversion Formula

If a real estate listing provides the lot size in square feet and you want to know how many acres it is, you simply divide the square footage by 43,560.

Square Feet to Acres Formula: Acres = Square Feet ÷ 43,560

Example: You are looking at a property that is 200,000 square feet. 200,000 ÷ 43,560 = 4.59 acres

Conversely, if a listing is 2.5 acres and you want to know the square footage: 2.5 × 43,560 = 108,900 square feet

Why Do We Need Both Measurements?

Usually, real estate professionals use square feet for smaller residential lots in urban or suburban areas because it provides a more granular understanding of the property's size relative to the house footprint.

Acres are almost exclusively used for large suburban estates, rural land, farms, and commercial properties where measuring in square feet would result in impractically large numbers.
