Tipping culture in the United States has evolved dramatically over the last decade. What used to be a standard 15% is now often considered the bare minimum, and iPad point-of-sale systems are asking for tips at drive-thrus and bakeries.
So, what are the actual rules for tipping in 2026?
Standard Tipping Guidelines
- Sit-Down Restaurants (Good Service): 18% to 20%
- Sit-Down Restaurants (Exceptional Service): 22% to 25%
- Sit-Down Restaurants (Poor Service): 10% to 15% (Leaving no tip is heavily discouraged, as servers often make sub-minimum wage and rely on tips).
- Food Delivery (DoorDash, UberEats): 15% to 20%, or a minimum of $5 regardless of the order size to account for the driver's gas and time.
- Coffee Shops & Counter Service: Tipping is optional. Dropping a dollar in the jar or selecting 10% for a complex espresso drink is appreciated but not mandatory.
- Bartenders: $1 to $2 per drink, or 20% of the total tab.
