How Many Feet Are in a Mile? (And Other US Customary Confusions)

If you live in the United States, you grew up using the US Customary System for measuring length, weight, and volume. While it feels entirely natural to native Americans, anyone visiting from Europe or Asia will tell you that the math makes absolutely no sense.

In the metric system, everything scales neatly by 10s. In the US system, the conversions are seemingly entirely random.

The most famous example? The Mile.

How Many Feet Are in a Mile?

There are exactly 5,280 feet in one standard mile.

If you want to break it down further into other US Customary units:

  • 1 Mile = 5,280 Feet
  • 1 Mile = 1,760 Yards
  • 1 Mile = 63,360 Inches

Why 5,280? The Bizarre History

Why on earth would a measurement system choose 5,280 as a baseline multiplier? The answer dates back thousands of years to the Roman Empire.

The Romans originally measured distance by "paces." One Roman pace was equivalent to two steps (about 5 feet). A Roman Mile (or mille passus) was exactly 1,000 paces, which equated to roughly 5,000 feet.

However, in 1592, the English Parliament decided they wanted the mile to perfectly align with their existing agricultural measurement, the furlong (the distance a team of oxen could plow without resting). A furlong was exactly 660 feet.

To make the mile equal exactly 8 furlongs, they simply added 280 feet to the Roman mile, legally defining it as 5,280 feet. The United States inherited this system from the British Empire and never changed it.

The 5 Tomato Trick

If you struggle to remember the number 5,280 for a math test, there is a famous mnemonic device: "Five Tomatoes."

  • Five (5)
  • To (2)
  • Mates (8)
  • Oes (0)

Convert Miles Instantly

While "Five Tomatoes" is a fun trick, doing complex math with decimals (like calculating 3.4 miles into feet) is a nightmare to do in your head.
