How Many Business Days Are in a Year?

When calculating annual salaries, planning massive year-long corporate projects, or trying to figure out exactly how much PTO (Paid Time Off) you have left to burn, you quickly realize that a "year" in the corporate world is very different from a calendar year.

While there are 365 days in a standard year, no one actually works 365 days.

So, how many actual business days are there in a typical year?

The Standard Calculation

To find the number of business days, we start with a standard 365-day year and subtract all the weekends.

Total Days in a Year: 365
Total Weeks in a Year: 52
Total Weekend Days (52 × 2): 104

365 - 104 = 261 Business Days.

However, if it is a Leap Year (366 days), there will occasionally be an extra weekend day depending on what day of the week January 1st falls on. But generally speaking, there are 261 business days in a standard year, and 262 business days in a leap year.

Factoring in Federal Holidays

While 261 is the mathematical baseline, it does not account for public holidays where banks, federal offices, and most corporate businesses are closed.

In the United States, there are 11 official Federal Holidays:

New Year's Day
Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Presidents' Day
Memorial Day
Juneteenth
Independence Day (4th of July)
Labor Day
Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples' Day
Veterans Day
Thanksgiving Day

If you work for a company that observes all 11 federal holidays, your actual number of working days drops significantly:

261 Business Days - 11 Holidays = 250 Actual Working Days.

Knowing exactly how many days you actually work is crucial for several financial calculations:

Salary to Hourly Conversion: If you make $60,000 a year, you divide that by 2,000 working hours (250 days × 8 hours) to find your true hourly rate of $30/hour.
Project Management: If you are scoping out a "Year-Long" project, you are actually scoping out a 250-day project. Failing to account for holidays will cause your team to miss deadlines in Q4.
