The Difference Between Megabytes and Gigabytes

When you buy a new smartphone, laptop, or cloud storage plan, the very first choice you have to make is regarding storage capacity. Should you pay the extra $100 to upgrade from 256 GB to 512 GB? Do you actually need a massive 1 TB hard drive?

To make an informed financial decision, you must first understand the fundamental building blocks of digital storage: The difference between a Megabyte (MB) and a Gigabyte (GB).

The Base Unit: The Byte

To understand Megabytes and Gigabytes, you have to start at the bottom of the digital food chain.

Computers store data in microscopic switches that can only be turned "on" or "off" (represented by 1s and 0s). A single one of these switches is called a Bit.

  • If you string 8 Bits together, you get 1 Byte. A single Byte is roughly enough storage space to hold one single letter of text (like the letter 'A').

Because a Byte is so incredibly small, we have to group them into massive clusters to describe modern files like photos and videos.

What is a Megabyte (MB)?

The prefix "Mega" generally means "One Million." Therefore, 1 Megabyte (MB) is equal to roughly 1 million Bytes.

(Nerd Note: Because computers operate on a binary base-2 system, a true Megabyte is actually 1,048,576 bytes, but for consumer purposes, we round to an even million).

What does 1 MB actually look like?

  • A standard high-resolution photo from an iPhone is usually between 2 MB and 5 MB.
  • A three-minute MP3 song is usually around 3 MB.
  • A typical web page (including images) is around 2 MB.

What is a Gigabyte (GB)?

The prefix "Giga" means "One Billion." Therefore, 1 Gigabyte (GB) is equal to roughly 1 billion Bytes.

More importantly, 1 Gigabyte is equal to exactly 1,024 Megabytes.

What does 1 GB actually look like?

  • 1 GB can hold about 250 high-resolution photos.
  • 1 GB can hold about 300 MP3 songs.
  • 1 GB is roughly the size of one hour of standard-definition video.

Do You Need to Upgrade?

If you are a professional photographer shooting 4K video, a 256 GB hard drive will fill up in a matter of weeks. However, if you primarily use your computer to type Word documents (which are usually less than 1 MB each), you could type for the rest of your life and never fill up a 256 GB drive.
