Pregnancy Math: Why Your Due Date Doesn't Match Your Conception Date

Pregnancy math is notoriously confusing. You track your ovulation, successfully conceive, wait two weeks to take a pregnancy test, get a positive result, and go to the doctor... only to be told you are actually four weeks pregnant.

How is it possible to be four weeks pregnant when the baby was only conceived two weeks ago?

The Medical Standard: LMP

The confusion stems from the fact that medical professionals do not track pregnancy from the moment of conception. Instead, they track it from the first day of your Last Menstrual Period (LMP).

Why? Because traditionally, it is incredibly difficult for a woman to know exactly what day she ovulated and conceived. However, almost every woman knows exactly what day her last period started. It is a firm, undeniable biological milestone.

Because ovulation typically happens two weeks after a period starts, the medical community just tacks those first two pre-conception weeks onto the pregnancy timeline.

Week 1 and Week 2 (You aren't pregnant yet!)

During "Week 1" of your pregnancy, you are actually on your period. Your body is shedding its uterine lining and preparing a new egg.

During "Week 2" of your pregnancy, your body is building up estrogen and preparing to release the egg.

It is only at the very end of Week 2 (or the beginning of Week 3) that ovulation occurs, the egg meets the sperm, and true conception happens.

Working Backwards

If you have been given an Estimated Due Date (EDD) by your doctor after a dating ultrasound, and you want to figure out what day you actually conceived, you have to subtract those "ghost" weeks.

A full 40-week pregnancy is 280 days from the LMP. However, human gestation is actually only 266 days from conception.
