A Real-World Clothing Example

Let's say you are looking to buy a tailored jacket online. You take a tape measure and find that your chest circumference is exactly 42 inches.

You look at the website's sizing chart, and the options are listed only in metric:

  • Size M: 100 cm
  • Size L: 106 cm
  • Size XL: 112 cm

To find your perfect fit, you multiply your chest measurement by 2.54:

  • 42 inches × 2.54 = 106.68 cm.

Based on the chart, you know you need to order the Size L, as the Size M (100 cm) would be nearly two inches too tight!

Why Not Just Guess?

Many people try to use the mental shortcut of "one inch is roughly two and a half centimeters." While 2.5 is close to 2.54, that missing 0.04 makes a massive difference when measuring larger items.

If you are buying a 60-inch TV stand and use the 2.5 shortcut, you will calculate the width as 150 cm. The actual width is 152.4 cm. That 2.4-centimeter difference (nearly a full inch) could be the reason the TV stand doesn't fit into the alcove in your living room.
